Stadium and Arena Projects | Cities of San José and Santa Clara

DJP&A is experienced in providing quality environmental review for stadium and arena projects. DJP&A successfully works with lead agencies to comply with CEQA and ensure the unique aspects associated with stadiums and arenas projects, including nighttime lighting and glare and noise from events are adequately addressed. Our experience includes the following projects:

  • Earthquakes Stadium (PayPal Park), San José: When Major League Soccer (MLS) was established in the mid-1990s, the Earthquakes took part in the first ever MLS game at Spartan Stadium and emerged victorious against D.C. United before a crowd of over 31,000 fans. To this day, the San José Earthquakes remain a force in MLS and an integral aspect of the City’s history. In 2009, the Earthquakes unveiled plans to construct their own stadium and construction commenced in 2012. The stadium celebrated its opening in March 2015.

DJP&A prepared an EIR for the stadium in 2010, which analyzed the impacts of constructing the 18,000-seat stadium on a 14.5-acre site across from the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport. In 2014, DJP&A completed a subsequent analysis that evaluated the addition of stadium signage, including a LED video board on the outside of the stadium and flat rooftop signs. Aircraft pilot and driver safety was the primary concern with this supplemental project due to the orientation and proximity of the proposed signs to the airport and nearby roads.

  • 49ers Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara: After a long, storied history at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, the 49ers moved down the peninsula to Santa Clara, California in 2014. The new stadium is the first LEED Gold-certified football stadium in the United States and includes numerous sustainable features, such as: a 27,000 square foot green roof, the use of reclaimed water for field irrigation, and solar paneled pedestrian bridges and roof decks.

DJP&A prepared the EIR for the project, which analyzed the construction of the 68,500-seat stadium and the relocation of an existing substation. One of the main environmental issues was transportation. Our firm worked closely with the San Francisco 49ers, the City of Santa Clara, and the Valley Transportation Authority to minimize traffic and parking impacts during stadium events.  DJP&A presented the project’s environmental analysis at multiple Planning Commission and City Council hearings. The community interaction and stakeholder engagement fostered at these meetings ultimately led to a project that was supported by the local community.

  • SAP Center, San José: Constructed in 1993, the SAP Center hosts a huge variety of both sporting and non-sporting events year-round. The iconic arena is the home of the San José Sharks hockey team as well as music events, trade shows, and family events throughout the year. The SAP Center has been nominated for the “Arena of the Year” award twice, and has been recognized as having one of the highest non-sports attendance, not only North America, but around the world as well.

DJP&A completed the environmental review for the project in 1989, which broke ground in June of 1990. Construction of the arena took three years to complete and remains largely unchanged since it first opened.
